The Good in the Hard - Day One (Devotional)

Day 1: God’s Purpose in the Pain

Devotional:

Pain has a way of telling lies. It whispers that the chapter you’re in is the whole story, that God has left you alone in the middle of your heartbreak with no way out. When life feels heavy—when relationships fail, when opportunities vanish, or when everything seems to fall apart—it’s easy to wonder if God is even paying attention.

Can I be honest? When I was younger, I couldn’t understand why the seasoned saints kept saying, “There’s purpose in your pain.” I’d hear them testify, “God turned it around,” and sit there thinking, How? How can something that hurts so much ever work for my good?

Then I came across Joseph. His life was full of moments that looked like loss after loss. Betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison—Joseph had every reason to believe his story was over. But here’s the part that always grabs me: even in his hardest seasons, God was writing a bigger story. Every tear Joseph cried, every setback he faced, was leading to something greater. What others intended to harm him, God used to elevate him.

The same is true for you. What feels like a breaking point is often a building point in God’s hands. He’s not ignoring your pain; He’s using it. Every disappointment, every delay, every heartache—it’s all part of a purpose far greater than you can imagine.

I know it’s hard to see the good in the hard, but it’s there. Trusting God in the middle of a painful season isn’t easy. But if you hold on—if you believe that He’s working even in what feels broken—you’ll discover that God doesn’t waste a single moment. Everything He creates is good… even when it’s hard.

Declaration:
God is working in my pain to accomplish His purpose. What feels broken now is being made whole in His hands.

Prayer:
Lord, it’s hard to see Your hand when I’m hurting. But today, I choose to trust You. Help me remember that my pain is not wasted and that You are always working for my good. Strengthen my faith and remind me of Your purpose. Amen.

Thought Question:
What’s one area of your life where you’re struggling to see God’s purpose? How can you invite Him into that space today?
